Desktop Enforcer Help

What's New in 1.5:

Added Pop-up menu to tray icon so you can select what you want instead of having

to go too a window for everything.

Seperate Change Password and Option Menu to eliminate confusion.

Made just one single password window to avoid confusion.

Default is now just run Desktop Enforcer at start-up and not lockdown.  That way, user doesn't accidentally run the program and have to learn the hard way.

Uninstall button to remove program registries.

Install

    Requirements:

        Windows 95 or 98, vbrun500.dll

No special installation necessary, just run the program.  When the program first runs, it defaults to starting Desktop Enforcer when windows starts.  The password is defaulted to "password", I suggest you change your password to something a little less obvious.

Operating

When Desktop Enforcer is running it puts a key in lock icon into the system tray.  To lockdown the desktop, just left click on the icon.  When your computer is in lockdown mode, Desktop Enforcer takes whatever your desktop - be it designs or pictures - and covers your entire screen with it.  The start bar is hidden, Ctrl + Alt + Del and Alt + Tab are disabled.  When you hit a key, a password dialog window comes up and asks you for your password.  If you enter an incorrect password, or let it sit for 10 seconds, the dialog disappears.  The only way to get back to a working desktop is to enter the correct password, or restart you computer (unless you have lockdown at startup enabled).  NOTE:  Lockdown does not exit any programs or windows, it just denies you access to them.  Autorun will still work - which means when you insert and Audio CD, it will start playing (If you have Autorun enabled).

To change the settings for Desktop Enforcer, right click the system tray icon.  This will bring up a Popup menu.  Select your desired command.   Close closes the Popup menu.  Quit Enforcer removes the Desktop Enforcer Icon in the system tray and closes any open Desktop Enforcer windows.   About brings up an about window (how about that!).  It includes the current version and a link to my web site.  Options will bring up a password window that you type your current password in.  If you don't type the correct password in, then the password box will close and will not show you the options menu.   This way, prying eyes won't be able to tell if you have it set to lockdown when windows starts.  Checking the box next to "Start Enforcer Every Time Windows Runs" will automatically place the Desktop Enforcer Icon into the system tray when windows starts.  When disabled, Desktop Enforcer will not lockdown the desktop even if the option is selected.  Selecting "Lockdown Desktop At Windows Start-Up" will lockdown your computer when your computer boots-up.   NOTE:  Lockdown does not take effect until your windows finishes booting.   That means that it is possible to start programs by double ckicking on short-cuts or various other activities.  Generally, this period is very short - only a few seconds - and lockdown denies them access to whatever program was started.  NOTE:   Neither of the above options will work if you move, rename, or delete the deskenf program.  If you move it or rename it, run the program again, deselect both options, then reselect the ones you want.  Clicking Change Password will bring up another password window.   If you type in the correct current password, it will bring up the Change Password Dialog.  Just type the password you want it to be into both text fields exactly the same (the password is Case Sensitive), and click the Change Password button and Presto, your password has been changed.  Bothe the Change Password and Options Menu windows have a 15 second time-out.  If you leave them unattended for 15 seconds, they will automatically close.  Just an added security feature so if you get called away, someone else can't change your stuff.

Uninstall

To uninstall desktop enforcer, open the options menu and click on uninstall.  This will remove all the program's registry's entries.  Then all you have to do is delete the Desktop Enforcer program file.  If you run Desktop Enforcer after you click the uninstall button, it will revert to the default options.  If you delete the program without clicking the uninstall button, you should be just fine.   (NOTE:  the password will remain the same if you do not uninstall, so if you get Desktop Enforcer again and run it, it will be the same password.

Misc

This program has no warrenty whatsoever.  There should be no problems, but if any do appear, they are not the responsibility of the author of Desktop Enforcer.  By using this program the user agrees that any and all effects of using this program are the users responsibility alone.  The author does not claim that Desktop Enforcer will stop knowledgeable and proficiant users from getting around Desktop Enforcer by means of Safe-Mode booting or DOS Mode booting or before Lockdown can occur at Windows Start-Up (If Enabled), because it is possible.

This program is "Freeware" - which means that you don't have to pay the author anything (but the author would not be adverse to receiving money if you would like to send some ;).  You may copy and distribute the program if you wish as long as you retain the program and help file together and unaltered, and give credit to the author.  If any bugs occur the author would like to know about them.
